SOULM8TE logo (pronounced as Soulmate) is an upcoming American science fiction horror film directed by Kate Dolan from a story by James Wan, Ingrid Bisu and Rafael Jordan from a screenplay by Jordan with rewrites being done by Dolan. It is an expansion to the M3GAN universe, serving as a spin-off, and is produced by Wan and Jason Blum, with Bisu, Michael Clear, Judson Scott and Alayna Glasthal executive producing.[1] It currently stars Lily Sullivan and David Rysdahl.[2][3]

Synopsis

Falling in the tradition of ’90s domestic thrillers but with a modern, technological twist, SOULM8TE watches as a man (Rysdahl) acquires an Artificially Intelligent android (Sullivan) to help him cope with the recent loss of his deceased wife. In an attempt to create a truly sentient partner, the man inadvertently turns a harmless lovebot into a deadly soulmate.

Development

On June 20, 2024, Atomic Monster and Blumhouse announced SOULM8TE, a new movie in the M3GAN universe, “with a new technological twist.” Billed as a 1990s erotic thriller, Kate Dolan will direct the film. Dolan rewrote an original draft written by Rafael Jordan, with the story by James Wan, Ingrid Bisu and Jordan. James Wan and Jason Blum will produce SOULM8TE. Michael Clear and Judson Scott, of Wan’s Atomic Monster banner, will executive produce, along with Ingrid Bisu. Alayna Glasthal is the executive leading the project for Atomic Monster.[1]

Filming

Principal photography is set to begin in September 2024 in Dublin, Ireland.[5]

Casting

In August 2024, Lily Sullivan and David Rysdahl were cast opposite one another.[2][3] Claudia Doumit also joined the cast opposite Sullivan and Rysdahl.[4]

Release

SOULM8TE is scheduled to be theatrically released in the United States on January 2, 2026, by Universal Pictures.[1]

Notes & Trivia

  • While the film is part of the M3GAN universe, sources stress that it’s a great deal more risqué than the original horror thriller. Following a different story and characters, it falls in the tradition of ’90s domestic thrillers but with a modern, technological twist.
